Wooden Desk

I built a desk during COVID lockdown

Before and after of my new desk

During COVID lockdown, I was upset with my tiny wooden desk and decided to build a new one with the table saw and belt sander I had access to. The top consists of a plywood backing with 6 maple planks on top (screwed and glued in from the bottom). This results in a pretty large 5ft x 2.83ft desk surface. A drawer is held in place on two rails that are screwed into the bottom of the desk surface with some steel L brackets.

Disassembled desk when moving to college. The corner brackets are my attempt at a new type of off-the-shelf screw on leg that ended up being too wobbly.
My first time welding. Not great.

When making the table legs, I also learned to weld for the first time (you can tell). I used some scrap L channel to create brackets to hold the legs. They were designed to be removable using 4 bolts on each leg. However, when it came time to move the table to college, it was clear that this did not work. The bolts were stuck in place and completely inaccessible. I think I learned a good lesson about accessible design here. I ended up having to unscrew and chip off part of the table just to get them off. I’m gonna get around to a new leg design at some point when I have some free time at home.
